Heads or Tails

Anything could change at a moment's notice.

Sometimes we assume the worst of this possibility. But it's just as likely that if you flip that coin, something good could happen, too. You might get the phone call from the love of your life.

Or the job offer that wrenches you from your current hell-hole to safety and peace of mind.

Maybe wake up to an e-mail that tells you your future home is within your reach.

A doctor's visit that reveals the cancer is gone.

The best is just as likely as the worst. And that's even in things are completely out of our control.

Yet if you're like me, you're shocked when good things happen. Rightfully so, we rationalize. Who are we to reap the benefits of fate? After all, no one gets out of here alive.

What would happen if instead of expecting the worst and praying for the best, we acknowledge that we already have the best. What if in the midst of ecstatic ups-and-downs, we realized anything beyond the gift of life is a generous grace indeed?

Would that give us the courage to flip the coin? Sometimes knowing you've already won gives you the spark of insanity necessary to take the leap of faith you never would have. And yes, 5 out of 10 times, we'll land square on our faces.

But the other 5? We might just find the crazy, beautiful unexpected blessings worth every ounce of uncertainty, anxiety, and pain.

Flick. Ping. Rattle.

Heads.
