Cosmic Calendar Meets Seismic Soul
Everything in my life has seemed to run on some ridiculously pristine timetable. As long as I can remember, excellent timing marked the major events of my youth. Good timing doesn't equal easy, however - often, taking advantage of good timing means just the opposite.
1) 2006 I jumped aboard the Running Start train early and packed my schedule for two years to secure that AA degree when I was only 17 (an August baby). Long before people started talking about chopping blocks and whether the program would last. It was hard. I busted my backside. I often felt lonely and had falling-outs with friends my age who weren't in college and couldn't understand why I couldn't be with them all the time.
2) 2008 I snagged my first job as a hostess at a fine dining restaurant right after I turned 18, during my first quarter at university, and right before the Holidays. I made hay all through college there. I busted my backside some more, took whatever hours I could get, and saved like a squirrel. I dealt with insane guests, bitchy co-workers, a string of Mad Hatter bosses that ended with one who was the Devil.
3) 2010 I landed a salaried position doing outreach for a small non-profit 6 months after graduation and was able to quit the restaurant gig and hit the road. Right as the recession got really bad and people I knew from college were settling on the idea that they could either be unemployed or go back to school.
4) 2012 And now I'm a homeowner. Scoring a place at the deepest dip of the market, rock-bottom interest rates, burst price bubbles and all.
Yes, in all of this, I busted my backside and saved like a squirrel and tried to make good of any blessings that came my way. But that's an awful lot of close shaves to be thankful for.
5) ???? I suppose if good timing has blazed your life when it comes to education, jobs, finances, and your home, you can't really complain if you have exceptionally, notoriously horrible timing in a single part of your life. In my case, the "single" part of my life. (Ha, yes, I'm sure you follow). So, knowing what I know, I will endeavour to be content and see if all the little mishaps, disappointments, and frustrations turn out to be part of this streak of good timing after all.
Also, in listing these events, I've noticed my particular cosmic waterfall seems to have a thing for round, even numbers and two year gaps.
I wonder what 2014 will bring? Hmm...
